How it all began.....

Nicholas’ interest in music began in 2002, his passion for music inspired by local teachers Tim Day and Richard Batty through their teachings on Drum Kit, Guitar, Bass and Piano.
He soon joined bands in the Cambridgeshire scene and began gigging around the UK, as well as picking up certificates in Bass, Electric Guitar and Drums. Unsure of his future, Nicholas went to North Herts College and received tuition from drummer Dave Storey (The Enid), and session musicians Steve Lockwood and Chris Gardiner. After completing the music BTEC and A-level, plus receiving the North Herts College Vision award, Nicholas decided to pursue music as a career.

Nicholas then spent time out working as a private educator and musician in Cambridgeshire with students successfully completing examinations and starting careers of their own, meanwhile working in theatre, original and function bands around Cambridgeshire and the UK.

He then continued his studies at the renowned Jazz conservatory Leeds College of Music, under tuition of bassist Zoltan Dekany (Dennis Rollins Bad Bone & Co, Joel Purnell Quartet) who introduced Nicholas to the double bass and concepts of Jazz improvisation and composition on the bass.

During his time at LCM, Nicholas also studied under musicians such as Pete Sklaroff, Jamie Taylor (Java), Omar Puente (Courtney Pine), Mornington Lockett, Lucky Ranku and Jiannis Pavlidis. He was also involved in various Jazz and world music ensembles including the LCM Big Band which during his time there won the Great North Big Band Competition and performed in a special concert and workshop with session trumpeter Derek Watkins.

Whilst completing the BA (Hons) in Jazz he was actively involved in performance and composition projects in and outside of the college. These performances include Traditional, Original and Free Jazz ensembles, also on Original Pop projects such as the Laura Hunter Band and The James Welch Band.

In his 3rd year at the college, Nicholas became involved with Fiddle player Anna Esslemont and Bodhran & Perussionist Cormac Byrne (BBC Young Folk Musicians of the Year 2002) in their exciting new project expanding their already established band Uiscedwr into the Uiscedwr Big Band. The band has also recruited distinguished musicians such as Neil Yates, Karen Tweed, and Dylan Bible and is busy working festivals and folk clubs around the UK after their debut at the Celtic Connections festival in 2008.

After recently graduating from LCM, Nicholas now resides in a peaceful village outside Cambridge where he continues his own studies and career in performance and private tuition. Biography
